Old Drivers Are Making Me Crazy. Young Ones, Too.

Curse you young driver!

It used to be funny to make cracks about women drivers.  Now we know that such comments are sexist and demeaning.   Besides, gender has nothing to do with driving ability.  All the truly bad drivers are either really old or really young.

Where do I go for more ageist ranting?

Horton Hatches The Post

Quiet! Writer at work.

I write in my head.  That’s probably true for most writers. You start with an idea: a tiny, fragile egg to be protected and nurtured.

While my body is working out, washing dishes and folding clothes, my mind is elsewhere.  I’m building a nest for my egg; picking up and discarding twigs, bending and shaping them to my purpose.  Thinking.

Better read on to see if I laid an egg with this one…

The Jacket: Entries, The End

Famous Michigander (and blog-lover) Gerald Ford gets ready to read The Jacket entries before the big game.

Time to sit back, put your feet up on your desk and read the final 5 entries in The Jacket: Writing Competition.   They are all unusual, as usual.

Don’t forget to visit the blogs of those who choose to have blogs.  Not everyone does, of course, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I have a Herculean task before me now; selecting the finalists.  I am going away for the weekend.  I will climb to the top of a tall mountain and seek spiritual enlightenment at an ashram, where I can select the finalists in peace and tranquility.  I will cleanse my body of all impurities, meditate and commune with nature.  Get centered.   Get in touch with my inner-blogger.  When I get back, rested and refreshed in body and soul, I will post the short list for your vote.

On the way back down the mountain, I may stop in at a St. Paddy’s day parade party in Michigan for some liquid centering.  Ohhmm  Ohhmm.

Don’t forget the wearing of the Green this weekend.  Not only will you be tipping your hat to St. Patrick, you’ll be showing your support for the Michigan State Spartans  (breaks into moving, tearful chorus of “On The Banks Of The Red Cedar”).

Go Green!!  Go White!!

This way for the good stuff…

The Jacket: Entries, Post Four

Tom….Tom Wojciechowski…Tom…Tom Wojciechowski…

The contest is closed, but the goodness just keeps on rolling here at Peg-o-Leg’s The Jacket writing competition. You know the drill.  If not, look over to the right to read all about what’s going on here.

This is the fourth set of entries to be presented. If you’re like me, you’ve been mesmerized by the writing.   There will be one, last group going up on Friday. Check the page up top to read the entries that have been posted so far.

Thanks to all who have entered. I’ve been having a blast reading these, but the hard part is about to begin – selecting the finalists. I will announce the short list next week and then it will be up to you to vote for the winner.

Be sure to hop on over to these writers’ blogs and say howdy.  And now, the next 4 entries…

Here be the reads…

Everything I Need To Know In Life, I Learned From Star Trek

"Um, it's my head, Doc." "Dammit, Lib, I'm a doctor, not a...doctor. Oh, yeah."

According to Robert Fulghum, we learn everything we need to know in kindergarten.  Not me.  No offense to Mr. Fulghum, but I learned most everything I’ll need in life from Star Trek.   Even about cancer.

In the episode A Taste of Armageddon, Captain Kirk and his crew landed on a planet at war.  The two sides had been fighting for so long that they had evolved a more “civilized” approach to the business.  They avoided many of war’s nasty side effects, like disease and destruction of property, by treating it like a computer game.    Whenever one side’s computer missiles penetrated the other’s defenses it showed as a hit.    The programs tallied up the numbers and the casualties trotted off to the anti-matter chamber to be vaporized.  That means to be made dead.

Hey, this is good stuff! Where do I go to read more?

The Jacket: Entries, Post Three

The creative process.

Happy Friday, and welcome to the next batch of entries in The Jacket: A Writing Competition.  If you’re breaking into a rousing chorus of “What’s It All About, Alfie?”  right about now, then

1)      You have good taste in music
2)      You have good taste in films
3)      You’re old
4)      You’re clueless about this competition.

If you fit into category #4 please check out the right hand column for rules and an entry form.

I continue to be both delighted by the caliber of entries I’ve received, and smugly superior because my readers are so very clever.  Y’all give yourselves a pat on the back.  I think this contest has been a dream-come-true for most, as so eloquently illustrated by the picture above of the typical writer’s experience.

Click on the page at the top of this page, under the header picture, to check out the previous entrants.

If the writer is also a blogger, I’ve posted a link to their blog.  Stop by and share some love after you get done here.  All entries will be printed here, and I will finish up with the rest next week.  Then I will announce the finalists for your vote.

More, more, more! How do you like it, how do you like it…

The Jacket: A Nagging

Just a little reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for submitting your entry in The Jacket: A Writing Competition.

“Wha???” you ask.

“What’s that all about?”  you demand.

“Can I get fries with that?” you query thoughtfully.

To find out all about the competition…

Look to the top, look to the right, stand up sit down, fight, fight, fight!

(Bet you didn’t know I was a cheerleader for all of a couple of months in 8th grade.  Yup.  Yuppers.)

I will post the next 5 entrants tomorrow and the final entries (unless I get a new batch overnight) next week.  Remember, the fate of the free world, as well as ownership of that spiffy jacket, is on the line.

Get your entry in now!

Dear Beloved Investor

2011 was not a good year for us, financially.   I know we’re not alone.

Our stock funds went down the toilet, our house is worth less than we owe on it and the bank now sends me a statement each month demanding that I pay THEM for holding onto my savings.  The only bright spot in this financial gloom-fest is that our bonds are still holding their own.  I don’t think two, $25 savings bonds are going to take us far in retirement, however.

The Jacket: Entries, Post Two

Please no cracks about my beard. I’m a little sensitive about it.

The good news is, I had more entries for The Jacket Writing Competition than the big fat zero I was expecting.  Instead of coming up with a handful of new WordPress IDs so I could stuff my own inbox with bogus submissions, I’m speeding up the delivery of entries to you, the eager reading public.

If you don’t know what the heck I’m babbling about, it has to do with that spiffy green jacket styling-up the right-hand column of this blog.  Go ahead and read all about it.

Presented for your reading pleasure are the next 5 entrants in the competition.  The first 5 entries were posted last Friday.  Click on the page above to see The Jacket: Entries, Post One.

Remember you have until this Friday to get your entry in.   I want YOU!  Yes, I mean you.  You, RIGHT THERE!  What, are you blind?  I’m pointing right at you!  (If you ARE blind, no offense.  Submit something anyway.)  Don’t let snow, sleet, rain, dead of night (or apathy) keep you from the swift completion of your appointed story.

Make sure you visit the entrants who have blogs, and leave some love for these talented (and brave) writers!
Read on, Macduff!

The Jacket: Entries, Post One

The Beaver did NOT submit an entry. He’s so ashamed.

Presented for your reading pleasure…the first batch of five entrants in The Jacket: A Writing Competition.  Click in the right-hand column (where you’ll see, coincidentally, a picture of a spiffy, green jacket) to find out what this is all about.  It will make a lot more sense if you do, so go ahead.  We’ll wait right here for you to get caught up.

I’m stoked about all the people who have entered so far, and am super impressed with the level of talent shown.   Entries are being printing in the order received.  If you provide a title for your piece, I show it.

I’m sorry I can’t figure out how to show gravatars, but I do provide a link to the writer’s blog, if they have one.   Be sure to visit them and leave some bloggy love.  Some of the entrants are not bloggers, however, but gifted readers who are turning the tables on us.  And that’s great!

Check back next Friday when the next batch of entries will run.  Actually, check back every day because, you know, I write stuff on this-here blog, too.  Entries will be moved up top under The Jacket Competition page on Monday to make room for my own pearls of humor and wisdom.

You still have a week to enter, so sharpen your pencils, get your writing caps on and turn out the next, great entry for The Jacket: A Writing Competition! (while sitting there looking like a big dork wearing a writing cap and clutching a bunch of sharp pencils)

Read on, Macduff!
