Imagine your best friend won the Nobel prize. Dignitaries, family and friends from all over the world would fly in to Stanislav or wherever, just to pay homage to the deserving honoree. And imagine you didn’t go. You stayed home, curled up on the couch in your jammies, eating cheese curls and drinking cheap Muscato while watching Toddlers & Tiaras. What kind of friend would you be?
A pretty, darn sucky one. Like me.
Darla at She’s a Maineiac got Freshly Pressed a couple of weeks ago for her hilarious post, Happy Impending Death Day. I missed the whole thing.
Word Press devotees know that there are few higher honors than having your post selected as the best of the best in your category for that day. It’s a public pat on the back, an “atta boy” – a bracing affirmation for bloggers who write words day after day and often wonder if what they’re sending out is any good.
I read Darla’s wonderful piece about her wonderful mom when it was first posted. And it was wonderful. I snorted milk out of my nose, something that often happens when reading her stuff. But I missed seeing it up on the Freshly Pressed page on the big day, which, as it happens, was my birthday. I missed her blog post announcing the big event. Missed the celebratory party. Didn’t help clean up the empty Ripple bottles, streamers and deflated balloons, and didn’t join in the next day’s hangover.
It’s been an incredibly hectic summer, and I’ve been somewhat MIA around WordPress, as some of you may have noticed, but that’s no excuse. Hope you can forgive me, Darlinkidinkidoo. WordPress will just have to Freshly Press your next post so I can join in the celebration in real time. I see no reason why that shouldn’t happen.
p.s. Me too. Today. For this post. Yay.
p.p.s. Toddlers & Tiaras doesn’t seem to be on TV anymore, so it’s hard to find a reason to go on. Being Freshly Pressed again is no substitute for watching baby princesses in mile-high hair throwing temper tantrums, but it does help lighten the spirits.

Go Darla and Peg! Loved both of those posts. I have to admit to missing Toddlers and Tiara’s, but make up for it by watching Bachelor in Paradise….The last rose ceremony was a cliffhanger!!!!

Thanks Susie. You are the only person I know who has publicly admitted to liking Toddlers and Tiaras. We are brave people. I will check out B in P now that I’m looking for a new, mindless reality show.

I never check it, either. Since I knew I was going to be on it I checked it out – they SURE have a ton more, dare I say, obscure tags nowadays. I sound old, don’t I?
I’m not getting much done today either, Carrie, but it’s a national holiday (almost) so that’s OK.

Don’t be hard on yourself. it is difficult keeping up with new posts, etc., constantly, especially during a hectic summer! As for toddlers and their tiaras, the only ones I see are those on my two granddaughters.

Ummm…so I just stopped by and noticed there seems to be some confusion about your post, people are not getting it’s a joke. (??) Oh my. See, this is what happens when they stick you in a category that’s not “humor”. People are a little slow on the uptake. My last FP they stuck it under “death”. So I ended up attracting the wrong audience who were shocked to find out it was “humor”. In fact, none of my FPs were “humor”. A few were filed under art, technology, death instead. haha!

I know. Gotta say, I don’t like the plethora of new categories – it makes it too easy to get lost in the shuffle. My last one was under “nostalgia” or something equally toxic. The only new readers I got were a couple of seniors who stumbled on to my blog when one of the aides at the home accidentally left the computer in the Activities Room turned on to WordPress. They were so disappointed it wasn’t a Lawrence Welk retrospective, they didn’t even hang around.

I just spent 5-1/2 hours trying to locate that sketch and insert it here for your viewing pleasure, but no luck. You’d think on FP days a blogger would get special powers like x-ray vision or the ability to find an old SNL sketch. It’s really not like the old days.

I think I must have missed all the funny stuff. Lots of people I respect like him. Same with Will Farrell. I missed his funny stuff too (except his George W which was spot on). So I really think there is timing involved in not just delivering comedy, but in receiving it!

Many of my favorites seem to get FP’d often. I miss it often, maybe cause I don’t check the page, being a neophyte and all. I guess I figure I will never be FP’d in any category at all (being to controversial most of the time) there really is no reason to do so. I will hear about you all from you all and then I will be able to do this….. woop wooop woooop and congratulations. Which I mean sincerely and with all good intentions. I read Darla’s post when she wrote it and thought it was wonderfully well done.

Thanks, Val. They cover a really broad range of topics now on FP, and most are not the frothy pieces of fluff that I put out. In fact they do a lot less humor than in the old days. So your day will come!
