The ashtray struck a nerve with me, they’re everywhere, alongside the chewing gum. Yuck. Good one, MJ! Can’t wait to see your necklace, Pegoleg.

That’s what prompted this post. I walked out of my office the other day and somebody had emptied their ashtray in the gutter out front – a gross mess of butts in a mud puddle. I thought, “some people see the world as their oyster, and some see it as their ashtray.”

I remember once walking outside of a Jaguar/Rolls-Royce/Ferrari/Infiniti dealership where I briefly worked in Imaginaryland (california, I mean) and a couple who had just come in to look at pricey cars, without buying, returned curbside to where their beautiful Mercedes Benz was parked. The other Salesman stood there, stiff as deadguy, and watched them drive off. He then growled with disbelief as he hurried up to the curb…he pointed down to show me where that lovely, well-off couple had dumped a dirty baby diaper in the clean, swept gutter. I was stunned. He said he had watched the wife change the baby in the car, then just fling the diaper over her shoulder into the curb, shut the glossy silver car door, and they all 3 drove away. Just like that.

On that particular day, I wished the world was my shooting gallery.

The world is my garden. I harvest it every day when I read all the amazing things that the bloggers of the world write… I’d prefer to harvest chocolate, but the world doesn’t seem to work that way…

The world is so full of different-ness, sometimes I don’t know where to turn, but much of it is inspiring.

That’s so true – it is full of different-ness. Sometimes I have to remind myself to appreciate what is different, instead of going with my gut reaction of “different = not good”.

Today (first day back to work after Christmas vacay and I’m a teacher) the world was one of those big “Wipe Out” sets- you know the kind with the big balls and the stuff that pops out and whacks you in the face just as you’re trying to step off some slimy ledge for higher ground. That being said, I am one day closer to summer vacation! 🙂 BTW- just found you and am enjoying your blog thoroughly!

The world IS our oyster, to be sampled and explored!
“See the world while you can”, someone recently said to me. Oh, yes, that would be the idea for sisters weekend NEXT year – to go to London. Hmmm…. I’ve never been, yet would love to see Europe. What’s holding me back?

I remember taking a one year job as an AET – Assistant English Teacher in Japan. Ended up staying for two years. THAT was an adventure, as much of my life has been.

Ultimately, life is just that – an adventure, to be sampled and explored as much as possible. Life is short. People matter. Explorers must explore whilst they can!!! (what with bad knees and all).
The world is our oyster. Gather those pearls!

NOTHING is holding you back. Put it in on your calendar: London, next year, with me and a motley cast of sibling characters.

Althought I love the idea of the world being my oyster, I don’t like oysters themselves. Does it lose something if I want the world to be my shrimp?

oops. times up. Time to eat oysters, have a smoke and strut around on stage until we’re inspired or need to go to the toilet again. May your world keep spinnin’.

Great post. I will enjoy this deep into the wee hours wondering, just like I used to when I knew more. I used to know a lot more years ago. The world was bigger then. It began to shrink the day after I sampled caviar the first and only time.
